List of federal and state laws governing sexual services
The legal regulation of sex work in Austria falls within the competence of the federal government with regard to some central aspects, while other aspects are specific to the federal states. The general tax and social security provisions are regulated by federal law. Sex workers are considered “newly self-employed” in Austria.
Across all federal states, there is an obligation to have a health check-up, which takes place every 6 weeks.
The respective state laws primarily regulate who, when and where can offer sexual services, what age limits there are and which places of work are permitted. Furthermore, the laws contain state-specific regulations for brothel businesses.
The regulation of sex work in Austria can therefore be described as complex and inhomogeneous.
